The Astoria Recreation Center offers programs for youth and adult sports, and adult fitness classes. Additionally we provide after school and no-school-day programs for kids and teens. Register online for many of our sports programs, special classes and events. Zumba: Zumba takes the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party.  Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see how effective and fun of an exercise this is. This is designed for everybody and every body.  See why Zumba has taken the world by storm!

NEW! Hatha Yoga:  A class designed to concentrate on physical health and mental well-being. This class combines posture, breathing techniques, and stretching exercises to unwind, and release tension, providing a good counterpoint to both busy lifestyles and cardio workouts with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind. 

Boot Camp: This class is designed for people who want a strong and healthy sweat, but no choreographed movements. Back-to-basic movement patterns, cardio interval drills and muscle endurance weight training produce an eff ective, calorie-burning workout.

Core/Strength: Walk taller, feel stronger! This class is designed to build core muscle groups while improving posture through performing a variety of exercises that strengthen the abdomen and back muscles and increase fl exibility. The instructor may include a variety of equipment in the work out.

Pound! Channel your inner performer and rock your body with this modernday fusion of movement and music. Drum along with a slammin’ soundtrack using Ripstix--weighted drumsticks designed to transform drumming into a kick-butt, fat burning, full body interval workout that will leave you dripping sweat.

Studio Cycling: This is a group exercise class on stationary bikes. During the class, the instructor simulates a ride. Together, you travel on fl at roads, climb hills, sprint, and race! It’s a truly fantastic cardiovascular class.

Cycling 360: This class adds variety to your everyday indoor cycling class by combining the best of indoor cycling, off the bike strength training and core training. The result is a total body program that allows participants to experience a great cardio workout while strengthening their upper body and core.

Barre: Barre classes use a combination of moves that incorporate ballet, yoga and Pilates. Barre exercises focus on isometric strength training combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. Barre helps increase fl exibility by lengthening muscles. You DO NOT need to be a dancer to gain benefi ts from barre classes.


Summer Day Camp at the ARC
Children ages 6-11 are invited to have fun and create lasting memories at our weekly themed Summer Day Camps.  Sign up for a week or the whole summer.  Drop-in is available depending on availability.  We meet Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.  Cost is $130/week.

Summer Sports at the ARC

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an exciting and benefi cial martial art for youth. Translated as “The Gentle Art”, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses posture, positioning, and technique to subdue an opponent with leverage instead of violence. Students will gain self-confi dence, physical fi tness, and a feeling of accomplishment by learning simple principles and techniques that improve their skills quickly. This class is an introduction to the art with an emphasis on fundamentals, bullying prevention, and having fun while learning.

Mon, June 26 –August 21, 6-7pm (no class July 3) ; Ages 7-14 ; $55

Flag Football: This program is an introduction to the fundamentals and skills needed for the classic sport of football. The basics of throwing, catching, and defense will be emphasized. Games will be played during the second half of the program.

Tuesdays & Thursdays, Aug. 22– Oct.12, 5:30pm–6:30pm, Columbia Field, Ages 6–10, $40

Adult Coed Softball: Take me out to the ballgame! Interested in playing softball? This is the sport for you! Our program off ers a league for the competitive and the less skilled. Men and women, young and old, just for fun or for the competition – it’s a little bit of something for everyone!  Meeting for coaches and interested players is scheduled for July 6.

Games played Monday–Fridays, July 24–Aug. 31 at Evergreen Ball Fields, $365/team before June 30, $415/ team for later registrants.

Michelle Hughes

Michelle Hughes has been an umpire for the department for four years, and also fills in occasionally as a basketball referee.  Michelle has an amazing attitude and has the ability to manage relationships with both the coaches in the youth leagues and competitive players in the adult leagues. She is always willing to work at any level on the softball field, often times filling in for umpires without any notice.


Michelle is very much appreciated for all that she does for our recreation program and how she handles herself maturely as a sports official.  Thanks, Michelle!
