Sports at the ARC

 Astoria Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of recreation leagues and open gym options available for both  YOUTH  and  ADULTS.  It's all about having fun! You can register for sports programs by following THIS LINK. 

YOUTH SPORTS

Girls' Volleyball Clinic, Grades 3-6 pdf Document

This program places an emphasis on teaching the values of good sportsmanship, teamwork, goal setting and skill development in a fun, esteem-promoting atmosphere. Children will have the opportunity to learn the basic volleyball fundamentals such as underhand serving, setting, hitting, and digging in a non-competitive environment.


Clinic runs April 23rd-May 23rd, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Astoria Middle School, $40/5 week session. Registration closes 4/30.

 

 

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: pdf Document

This introductory class focuses on allowing youth to gain self confidence and learn the art of non-violence and civility. This incredibly rewarding martial art teaches the student to rely on skill and body mechanics instead of physical strength when dealing with an opponent. Register by the first day of class.


Monday evenings 6pm-7pm, Astoria Recreation Center, Ages 8 & up, $55/seven week session

Youth Flag Football pdf Document

 

This program is designed to help children learn the basics of Flag Football, including the fundamentals of throwing, blocking, flag pulling, running and teamwork. Players will play at least half of each game. For grades K-4th.

Register by 8/02, Season is August 19th to October 19th. Practices based on coaches' availability and will generally be weekday evenings, twice a week until games start, once a week after games start; Times & Locations TBD, Cost is $55.

 
Boys' & Girls' Basketball, 4th-6th Grades pdf Document

 

This program will continue to build on the basic skills like shooting, passing, dribbling and teamwork, while increasing competition levels for each grade. Each player plays at least half of each game.

   

Register by October 11, Season is October 17th to January 17th. Practices based on coaches' availability and will generally be weekday evenings, twice a week until games start, once a week after games start; Times & Locations TBD, Cost is $60.


 

ADULT SPORTS

 
Adult Co-ed Volleyball (Ages 16 & Up) pdf Document

Organize a team and come join your community volleyball players for a great season! Recreational games are scheduled and officiated by the Parks and Recreation Department, all skill levels welcome.

Registration Deadline March 1st, Season is March 25 to May 20th, Games scheduled Mondays between 6 and 9pm at Astoria Middle School, $315 per team or $335 after registration deadline   

 

Men's & Women's Softball Leagues (Ages 16 & Up): pdf Document

Organize a team and oil up that glove because adult, slow pitch softball is here! Recreational games are scheduled and officiated by the Parks and Recreation Department, all skill levels welcome.

Registration Deadline May 3, Season is May 25 to July 19, 2 games each week, held on weekday evenings; 12 games total at Niemi Field (Tapiola Park) or Evergreen Field (Astoria Middle School), $400 per team or $420 after registration deadline

Mark Montgomery continues to be a cornerstone of the Parks Maintenance Division.  Marks capability to tackle any task, from painting classrooms to rebuilding pumps and motors at the Aquatic Center, never ceases to amaze. ark carries out every job with a smile and is always working hard to support his coworkers and improve our facilities. Thank you Mark!

 

Park Partner of the Month

Dale Hirahara is a 50 year resident of Astoria and of those 50 years she has coached softball for 23 of them. Dale has been a volunteer head softball coach with Astoria Parks and Recreation for 3 years, an assistant for many more, and she has run softball skills camps and clinics for the last 15 years. Dale is one of the most requested coaches by players in our community teaching 1st year players to the most advanced level of competitive youth softball.  Her kindness and knowledge of basic fundamentals have been great tools in shaping the skill set of young ball players in Astoria. Dale has also coached and played in our adult softball leagues for 30 years. Dale has been an outstanding volunteer and valuable softball ambassador for Astoria Parks and Recreation Department, and to the community at large.  Thank you, Dale!
