Run on the River 2020

Our 7th annual Astoria Run on the River sponsored by Buoy Beer Company is May 17, 2020. Join us for the half marathon, 10k or 5k on the beautiful Astoria Riverwalk.

Run on the River 2019 was amazing even with a temporary Riverwalk Detour. The 2020 race will also contend with construction on the even streets, but this race has always been able to adapt to changes along the Riverwalk!

More about the Temporary Course Detour

Due to construction on the Riverwalk scheduled through the end of May, Run on the River will be detoured from the course on the Riverwalk beginning at the 6th Street platform to 14th Street. This will temporarily deem the newly certified half marathon course uncertified at least through 2020. Its a hick-up for us, but is very important for the City of Astoria and the Riverwalk.

In October 2018, the City of Astoria and Oregon Department of Transportation began a two year project to repair the waterfront bridges along the Riverwalk. In 2020  the bridge structures located at the even numbered streets (6th, 8th,10th, 12th and 14th) will be under construction. During this time the Riverwalk is closed to thru pedestrian traffic.

If the project maintains its anticipated schedule, the completion of the first phase will be on the last weekend in May. While we would love to wait and see and hope that the project wraps-up two weeks early, were planning this next year’s race to incorporate the detour. The start and finish lines, as well as the celebration, will be held on 7th street at Buoy Beer.

Identifiable volunteers will be on hand to help direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the few crossings, particularly on the west end.
Five aid stations will be available along the entire half marathon course (which includes the 10K and 5K routes). The stations will offer Aquafina and snacks donated by our sponsor, the Astoria Co-op.
Run with care! You will be running across trestles, uneven surfaces, and trolley tracks which can be slick especially when wet (and it "sometimes" rains in Astoria!). Please watch your footing at all times.

Month

Niko Tila has been a lifeguard with the Astoria Aquatic Center for three years. During his time as a lifeguard, Niko has shown a strong aptitude as a first responder. He has also progressed as a natural leader among his peers, consistently going above and beyond to assist in coaching his peers when practicing lifesaving skills and  always leading by example. Niko was promoted to a lead guard in May of this year and has continued to excel as a leader.

Recently, in the Aquatic Center's quarterly unannounced audit, Niko received scores of "EXCEEDS standards" in all categories of the audit. His leadership during the skills testing scenario were so exemplary, he was given a special recognition of “outstanding rescuer." We are very proud of Niko’s achievement and greatly appreciate his leadership as a lifeguard.
