Run on the River 2019

Our 6th annual Astoria Run on the River sponsored by Buoy Beer Company is May 19, 2019. Join us for the half marathon, 10k or 5k on the beautiful Astoria Riverwalk. This race will sell out.

Run on the River 2019 is ramping up to be just as impressive, however we have a new obstacle to contend with this year: a temporary Riverwalk Detour.

Temporary Course Detour

Due to construction on the Riverwalk scheduled through the end of May, Run on the River will be detoured from the course on the Riverwalk beginning at the 6th Street platform to 14th Street. This will temporarily deem the newly certified half marathon course uncertified for the next two years. Its a hick-up for us, but is very important for the City of Astoria and the Riverwalk.

In October, the City of Astoria and Oregon Department of Transportation began a two year project to repair the waterfront bridges along the riverwalk. This year the bridge structures located at the odd numbered streets (7th St, 9th St and 11th St) will be under construction. During this time the Riverwalk is closed to thru pedestrian traffic.

If the project maintains its anticipated schedule, the completion of the first phase will be on the last weekend in May. While we would love to wait and see and hope that the project wraps-up two weeks early, were planning this year’s race to incorporate the detour. The start and finish lines, as well as the celebration, will be held on 8th street at Buoy Beer.

I have attached the link to the detour map that the City of Astoria provided for the public. As we get closer to the date well provide the revised course maps.

ROUTE

We've updated our race routes keys with more efficient placement of bathrooms and aid stations. Check it out. http://www.astoriaparks.com/race_routes.aspx

Please be advised
This is a PARTIALLY closed course. There may be other runners/walkers/bikers along the Riverwalk.
Identifiable volunteers will be on hand to help direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the few crossings, particularly on the west end.
Five aid stations will be available along the entire half marathon course (which includes the 10K and 5K routes). The stations will offer Aquafina and snacks donated by our sponsor, the Astoria Co-op.
Run with care! You will be running across trestles, uneven surfaces, and trolley tracks which can be slick especially when wet (and it "sometimes" rains in Astoria!). Please watch your footing at all times.

Sherry came to Astoria from Las Vegas, NV, seeking a small, community-oriented town to call home. It was apparent Sherry was a fit from the start, and she’ll tell you, “I was not sure what I wanted until I walked in the door. Everyone is friendly, and my co-workers are a true blessing to me. I take pride in doing my job to the best of my abilities and being a productive member of my new home town.” Sherry has not only impacted our Parks and Recreation Department professionally, but personally as well - she’s a pertinent member of our staff family and a genuine benefit to our community. Stop into the Recreation Center and say hi!

Ed Wegner first found Ocean View Cemetery through a SOLVE cemetery clean-up event he volunteered for in 2017.  Inspired, he returned in 2018 for a pre-Memorial Day clean-up co-sponsored by the Parks Department and SOLVE.  Despite being a resident of Aloha, Ed wanted to help assist the City of Astoria in caring for the grounds of the cemetery and become a regular volunteer, coming once or twice a month to remove invasive weeds, pick up trash, and generally neaten the site up.  Ed’s efforts have been greatly appreciated by the Parks Department and he was recently awarded SOLVE’s Volunteer of the Year award for 2018, standing out in a field of over 30,000!
